This volume is the result of a thematic seminar organised by the Department of Architecture at the University of Florence. Using photography as a tool for investigation, it explores the complex and ‘multiverse’ nature of Florence’s peripheral spaces. The research focuses on an area characterised by marginalisation and the presence of two large prison complexes, examining the intricate relationship between prisons and the surrounding city.
The book brings together academic contributions and the work of professional photographer Davide Virdis and students to document social art projects, such as ‘La Scritta Che Buca’, which was created in collaboration with the Mario Gozzini Prison and the Elektro Domestik Force group. The book transforms the camera lens into a critical tool capable of documenting and symbolically reclaiming places of exclusion.
