Personal Geographies

I hold a Master’s degree in Architecture (with a focus on Urban Planning) and a PhD in Urban, Regional and Environmental Design. I am currently an Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Florence. Having worked as a precarious researcher and professor for many years, I decided to define myself as a freelance researcher, which gave me the advantage of being able to think freely. During my years of precarious employment, I have worked for many institutions: I have been a researcher at the Regional Institute for Economic Planning of Tuscany (IRPET), a civil servant at the Regional Council of Tuscany and a consultant on various urban planning projects in Italy and abroad, including cooperation projects in Niger and Cuba and a short-term consultancy role in China.

I am a member of the Laboratory for Ecological Settlement Design (LAPEI), a research group based at the University of Florence, which developed the territorialist approach to planning and of the International Network for Urban Research and Action (INURA), an organisation whose aims include the study of the city from a critical and multidisciplinary perspective.

My research interests are varied and perhaps too eclectic to fit neatly into academic categories. In brief: the design of public spaces (particularly participatory design); insurgent approaches to interpreting and shaping space; ecology as a means of understanding the relationship between human settlements and the environment. Additionally, I am passionate about applying photography to urban research.

Below is a list of some of my most interesting (in my opinion) publications. It is possible to access more detailed information and, where applicable, the open file by clicking on each one. A complete list can be found on the Unifi pages.
