As urbanisation continues to spread across the planet, our world is being radically transformed, demanding new interpretive models. One of the most visible consequences is the emergence of ‘in-between’ spaces: interstitial areas that arise as by-products of development and yet hold unexpected value.

These spaces are vital reservoirs of social, ecological and imaginative diversity. Moving away from the notion of ‘voids to be filled’, this study analyses their rhythms, borders and evolution, placing them at the heart of urban sustainability. The aim is to transform these ‘scraps’ into a vibrant network of public spaces and to convert degraded areas into the new centralities of the contemporary city.
